Mortgage stress, the rental crisis, and critically low levels of available housing are high on the agenda here in Queensland, particularly off the back of last week’s interest rate rise.
QLS Planning and Environment Law Committee Chair Michael Connor, Committee member Troy Webb and QLS Principal Policy Solicitor Wendy Devine represented the Society at a public hearing into the Housing Availability and Affordability (Planning and Other Legislation Amendment) Bill 2023 on 9 November.
In its submission on the Bill, QLS acknowledges the shortage of housing supply and the government’s investigation of many options in response to the crisis.
However, QLS also expressed concern that the Bill is lacking detail about the criteria for the new State facilitated application pathway and the timeframes and processes to apply. QLS also did not support the new Urban Investigation Zone proposal, given the restriction on compensation rights for affected landowners.
